Melbourne Cup Day is a public holiday across Victoria on Tuesday 3 November 2026, unless an official local alternative applies. The holiday is therefore not confined to metropolitan Melbourne. A regional area also uses 3 November unless its entry appears in Business Victoria's annual non-metropolitan list.
Business Victoria updated that list on 3 August 2026. It contains 11 rows. The Victorian Government Gazette records two further declarations that the page omits: Murtoa's full-day holiday on 2 October and Warracknabeal's second half-holiday on Melbourne Cup Day. The calculator uses both sources.
The 2026 declarations cover 12 locality profiles
Each full-day alternative replaces Melbourne Cup Day for the area stated. Warracknabeal instead has two half-holidays, one on 8 October and one on 3 November. Together they replace the full-day Melbourne Cup holiday there.

The geographic wording matters. The Greater Bendigo entry does not cover the whole municipality, and the two Hindmarsh dates apply to different groups of localities. Murtoa and Warracknabeal also have different arrangements and must not be treated as one Yarriambiack-wide calendar.
The official page publishes details as councils supply them and tells readers to check back for updates. A date used in an earlier year does not automatically apply in 2026.
The calculator separates the locality groups
The calculator stores all 13 declared dates and half-dates across 12 locality profiles. Selecting a profile applies only the dates for that stated area.
Select VIC under State or Territory, then choose the profile under Local Holiday Area. Leave Local Holiday Area at Default (Melbourne Cup Day) when the statewide date applies.
Select Yarriambiack - Murtoa district for the full-day holiday on 2 October. Select Yarriambiack - Warracknabeal district for its two half-holidays. In an ordinary whole-day count, both 8 October and 3 November remain working dates; the calendar shows the half-holidays for information.
The two Hindmarsh dates also have separate profiles. The Rainbow district profile covers Rainbow, Albacutya and Kenmare on 13 October. The Nhill district profile covers the listed Broughton-to-Little Desert localities on 15 October.
Ballarat remains absent from the official 2026 list. The former recurring Ballarat Show Day rule has been removed from the calculator, so the Victorian default remains in that profile for 2026.
Greater Geelong changes the result by one day
Assume the start date is Monday 26 October 2026. Add ten working days, exclude the start date and use an ordinary Monday-to-Friday week.

The general Victorian result is Tuesday 10 November 2026.
Greater Geelong's alternative was Wednesday 21 October, before this count began. The Greater Geelong calendar does not include Melbourne Cup Day, so 3 November is working day 6. Its result is Monday 9 November 2026.
This comparison changes only the selected holiday calendar. The start date, period and boundary settings remain the same.
The applicable place comes from the underlying rule
A contract's business-day definition may refer to an office, site, registry, payment system or place where an act must be done. A Victorian governing-law clause alone does not select a municipal holiday calendar.
For National Employment Standards entitlements, the Fair Work Ombudsman says employees are entitled to the public holidays that apply where they are based for work, not where they happen to be working that day. Awards, enterprise agreements and ordinary hours can affect the resulting pay and attendance questions.
The calculator applies the selected calendar and lists the excluded dates. Read the contract or employment rules to identify the relevant place, then check whether that place falls within the exact municipal, postcode, locality or time boundary in the official entry.
