How the days are counted

By default, the calculator skips Saturdays, Sundays and Victoria’s public holidays, including Melbourne Cup Day. If your area uses a different holiday instead of Melbourne Cup Day, choose the matching local holiday area before calculating.

Working days by year

These are full-year totals for a Monday to Friday working week, excluding Victoria public holidays. They don’t include local holidays or extra exclusions, and won’t change when you edit the calculator.

Holiday rules

Local holidays and dates to check

  1. Melbourne Cup Day and local alternatives

Some councils outside metropolitan Melbourne arrange a local public holiday instead of Melbourne Cup Day. This can replace the Melbourne Cup date, rather than give you another day off. Check the council area, town or district named in the official notice, as nearby places may have different holiday dates.

  2. Labour Day, the AFL Grand Final and Anzac Day

Victoria’s Labour Day falls on a different date from NSW’s. Victoria also has a public holiday on the Friday before the AFL Grand Final. In 2026, Anzac Day is Saturday 25 April, with no replacement weekday holiday.

  3. Holidays that cover part of a day

Some local public holidays cover only a few hours. The calculator counts whole days, so it does not automatically exclude a full day for a part-day holiday. Check the hours in the official notice if they affect your calculation.
